“A nature hike , they thought not even a war, so they went off into the shade of some giant trees –-- quadruple canopy, no sunlight at all --- and they were jiggling and calling each other motherfucker and playing a silly game they’d invented.” At the beginning of passage Rat Kiley starts off with kid mentality and acts like a goof ball and avoids taking the war seriously and just treats it like a game instead . As the war progresses, Rat’s attitude begins to change. After his friend Curt Lemon got blown up after setting of a mine while he and Rat were playing around, Rat’s innocence seems to be taken away. He no longer is the same goofy kid from the begging of the war. Now he’s a violent and unhappy man. His lack of innocence is shown when he kills and tortures the baby water buffalo.
The true nature of war is something that is easy to explain but hard to understand. People are never the same after experiencing war. You won’t come out as the same person after going through war.The horrible things you will experience during combat will mold you into a different person. Your perspective toward things will change. Your attitude towards life will change. You will be desentitized . You will be dehumanized. War changes people . War is unforgivning . War is hell on
