While all the men in the group experience the same war, their responses to the situation and their personal struggles were quite different and their personalities and individual challenges are exemplified by the items each carried.

Each one being distinguished by the different things they carried. Soon came tragedy one of Cross 's burdens and greatest fears even though he never showed it was the death of Ted lavender whom carried tranquilizers and suffered from the greatest of fears. Ted was wrapped in his poncho which they all carried in their helmet for easy access. Then token away by chopper. After the chopper took ted away Lieutenant Jimmy Cross led his soldiers to the small village of Than Khe. Sweeping through this small village shooting cats and dogs burning everything in their way, as they marched for several hours. Kiowa then explained how Ted had died. Kiowa didn 't feel very close to God because his feeling of emotions would not surface. Sadness or anger just to feel something but couldn’t, something he could not understand.
