According to the textbook, corporate social responsibility is “the way a corporation achieves a balance among its economic, social, and environmental responsibilities in its operations so as to address shareholder and other stakeholder expectations.” (Sexty, 2017) Tim Horton’s has named their corporate social responsibility framework Our Making a True Difference™ which represents their dedication to “making a true difference for individuals, our communities and the planet.” (Tim Hortons 2015) Their social responsibility activities are carried out via their relationship with the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation who sponsors programs such as Smile Cookie and Timbits Minor Sports. A commitment to social responsibility is displayed in Tim Horton’s brand vision which states they strive to be “the fastest growing global restaurant brand with the best people proudly serving Canada’s favourite coffee while making a true difference in our communities.” (Tim Hortons 2015) In 2014, Tim Horton’s was a member of almost forty industry associations showing their commitment to “being engaged and taking leadership in what drives each industry.” (Marriott 2006) One of Tim Horton’s guiding principles is that they are “not just a good corporate citizen, but an active participant and partner for positive change in the world.” (Tim Hortons 2015)

Their social responsibility effort has been described as “the old-charity model” (Simon 2015) , which means that “we believe we should give back to our community, and we’ve got a charitable bucket of dollars,” but that the company hasn’t “really tightly defined what kind of impact they want to create.” (Simon 2015) Also since the 2015 Corporate Knights Ranking, Tim Horton’s was acquired by Brazil’s 3g Capital Partners. The effects of this acquisition on Tim Horton’s social responsibility activities is still being studied, but “skeptics point to 3G Capital’s reputation as cost-cutters and asset-strippers.” (Simon 2015) According to professors at York University, “There are already signs that the company’s commitment to sustainability is beginning to fade.” (Simon 2015) While Tim Horton’s in the past had “upped its game in the past few years”...”efforts so far to cut costs have effectively shut down the company’s sustainability department.” (Simon 2015) A investigation by CBC discovered that Tim Horton’s may not be as environmentally inclined as they let on. It was found that often cups recycled at Tim Horton’s were being thrown into the garbage. Also that “people who think they are avoiding paper waste by bringing portable coffee mugs are being ‘duped’” as employees are “encouraged to make their coffee in a paper cup and pour it in the travel mug” so that
