Tim Conolan is a passionate 47 year-old Victorian man striving to stand up for and protect the lives of hospitalised children. After attending a cancer support group as a motivational speaker at age 21, Tim was inspired by their stories to create an organisation called TLC for Kids dedicated to the support of children in hospital, regardless of age, religion, culture or illness. Tim has made it his life long ambition to endeavour positive change in the lives of hospitalised children, after noticing the lack of healthcare support services for sick kids.

The principal goal of the organisation was to put smiles back on sick kids’ faces, and Mr Conolan is doing exactly that by delivering over 4 million smiles to kids facing traumatic experiences in hospital. TLC for Kids offers practical and emotional aid to sick and injured children and their families at over four hundred hospitals right across Australia, helping approximately 1,750 sick children and their families each year. TLC for kids involves two main aspects, the rapid TLC service and the distraction box. The rapid TLC service comprises of healthcare professionals requesting free emotional and practical support for a sick child, then contacting TLC who immediately respond to take action to the request. TLC’s unique distraction box program is designed to give nurses and doctors the tools to reduce stress, fear and anxiety in children expecting painful examinations and procedures. The box holds items that engage and distract the attention of the child. Since TLC’s founding 18 years ago, 1,700 distraction boxes have been distributed and used around 80,000 times a year in hospitals all over Australia, over 6,000 rapid services have been fulfilled, over $10.5 million raised and the organisation is reaching more kids in Australia than any other charity in the country. Tim’s work relates to Verse 4 of the Beatitudes, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted”. This beatitude expresses that those who are going through sorrowful or painful times (like those of the children in hospitals) are understood by God and God is there for us during these times. Similarly, Tim employs this same value of understanding into his work. Like God, Tim understands the sadness, loneliness, fear and trauma that these children may experience dealing with illness, children worrying about something they shouldn’t ever have to worry about at their age; death. Through Tim’s TLC foundation, he is reaching out to comfort them. Tim and his TLC team are there for these kids when they feel most depressed and isolated. By offering emotional support through various tools like the distraction box, Tim is providing “comfort”, as stated in this beatitude. In addition, families who have lost a sick child will be mourning over them. Tim and TLC offers both financial and emotional support to again “comfort” these families through a difficult time of sadness. For example, TLC helps with funeral funds for the family to ensure a special time of parting for family and friends to both mourn and celebrate peace for the deceased child. It’s in this way that Tim and his TLC for Kids foundation lives out the compassionate mission of

Dear Children’s Hospital and Medical Center Administration, I am a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, and I have worked at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center for eleven years. I am writing to disclose information that I believe demonstrates a misuse of locus of authority, a breach of the American Medical Associations Code of Medical Ethics, and a breach of Children’s Hospital and Medical Center Code of Conduct by Dr. Bud Shaw. After verifying the facts of Dr. Shaw’s story with the employees that were on duty at the time of the incident, I have chosen to share the information with the administration of Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. On October 15, 2015 in a personal conversation that took place in the cafeteria of Children’s Hospital and Medical Center between Dr. Sally Doe, Dr. Shaw, and myself; Dr. Bud Shaw shared the actions he took in the care of his daughter while she was a patient at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in late September of 2015.…

Give examples of how the practice of ministry has affected your experience and understanding of A) God At the core of my understanding of God is a God of love in covenantal relationship with God’s children. Romans 8:38-39 says it well; “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The practice of ministry has only proven to strengthen that belief. I was called early Saturday morning to sit with a family who had just learned of the death of their daughter/granddaughter in a vehicle accident.…

Every day you meet patients of various backgrounds who create a positive impression that can last for a lifetime. Half of my childhood was spent observing my mother take care of my sick grandmother who was suffering from liver cirrhosis. As I grew up watching my mother nurse my sick grandmother, the value of compassion, love, and respect for the sick has been instilled in me. Many people in America are lacking adequate health-care even with Medicaid and Medicare. Due to lack of government funding, the quality of care is debased while the quantity of patients seen per day is given greater priority.…

I am a good friend of the Trossman family, but I am also a nursing student in my final year hoping to get a job as an RN in The Hospital for Sick Children (HSC) after I graduate. Over the past ten years I have formed strong relationships with families of children who require constant and complex medical care. Jacob Trossman and Taylor, Cole and Brody Florence are just the few I can name with permission. Prior to nursing school, the parents taught me the skills and knowledge needed to perform each child's needs in order to maintain safety as a priority during our outings. I was able to take them to the park, Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) and even sleepovers at my house without their parents being constantly worried how their children would manage without them nearby.…

Many of the children came from large families who were only able to give them limited attention, despite the fact that they desperately needed large amounts of individualized attention. The care that staff gave these children helped level the playing field for some of them. Despite their differences, all patients, first are foremost, are united by the fact that they are people who just want to improve their heath. As someone who is passionate about connecting with and helping others, I am interested in more than just the medical problems that people might have; I am interested in the patients as people. These experiences made me realize how important understanding the whole patient is.…
