The enchanting 2010 film Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton and written by Linda Woolverton, is an animated action Walt Disney movie based on Lewis Carroll’s novel Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland. The main character nineteen-year-old Alice Kingsleigh, is haunted by nightmares of a hidden place called ‘Wonderland’, furthermore, she returns and set out on a quest bursting with mysterious adventure. This film is a unique assembly containing distinctive characters, plots and cinematic language which draw the attention of the viewers. The of mood of fantasy is portrayed by many techniques throughout the film, however, it is vividly revealed through lighting.

Low-key lighting is defined as the use of deep shadows, and a high contrast between the darkest and brightest parts of the scene. This type of lighting technique is apparent throughout most of the film, with the inclusion of deep shadows in virtually every scene. This gives the film a generalized gloomy mood. For example, in the scene with the mysterious and sarcastic disappearing cat Cheshire, his intense colours of dark blues and greys, especially his large turquoise eyes outstandingly contribute to the fantasy theme of this film. The low-key lighting that surrounds the cat Cheshire interprets his cunning and fantastical mysterious mood, which is accompanied by the mischievous smirk which he gives occasionally. In the scene where Alice is walking in the dark ‘woods’ of Wonderland and she is greeted by Cheshire, he is depicted by low-key lighting which gives a haunted ambience.
