Tim Burton is renowned for embracing dark undertones in his movies. HIs style is not like most directors who ignore the dark undertones of their movies and just convey the happy side. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory there is a scene where the main character Charlie is opening his birthday chocolate to see if he won the trip to the chocolate factory. The sound in this scene is suspenseful and hopeful to make the audience feel like he's going to win and go to the factory, but that doesn't happen. Charlie and the audience are let down that there is no golden ticket in his chocolate bar, and because that was his only chance of winning the trip. This helps to create a sad/dark mood for the scene because of the disappointment and false hope Burton put in the audience's minds.
