How many movie directors have you heard of? Well, you simply must have heard the name Tim Burton in that mix. He is a famed director who is well known for his use of fantasy, innocence, and horror that is included in each movie he has creates. Tim Burton has been inspired by many people like Edgar Allen Poe, Dr. Seuss, Vincent Van Gogh, and many more. From all of these people he has been inspired by, he was influenced to create an unusual and unique style. Three movies I have chosen to analyze are Edward Scissorhands (1990), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2006), and Sweeney Todd (2007). He uses cinematic techniques to make his movies one of a kind. He uses techniques such as camera angles, lighting, and music to create a dark, child-like feeling.

For example, in the movie Edward Scissorhands(1990), when it shows the townspeople, who are generally bright, quirky, outgoing people, it has bright lights and it was always sunny out where they were. This is to create a fantasy look and give a feeling of delight and exhilaration. But when it showed Edward Scissorhands in his castle, it had a very low, dark light to create the feeling of loneliness and isolation, which perfectly explained Edward’s situation before the plot of the movie. A second example is in the movie Sweeney Todd. The movie generally has a very lifeless, pale look to all the scenes. Everything is gray and sets a depressing mood. But in a scene or two, they consisted of flashbacks of Mr. Todd, which was when he was living happily with his wife and child, which expressed how happy and how he was full of life back then These scenes have lots of color and light, unlike the rest of the movie.
