Style Analysis
In Tim Burton's movies he has a specific style that he portrays in everyone of them. Tim Burton's style can be viewed as uniquely horrific. The movies that he directs has one character that usually stands out from the rest. An outsider and how that outsider will never fit into society. He uses cinematic elements to portray his style, like lighting, diegetic and nondiegetic sound, and camera movement.
Lighting is a good element used in movies, it can show that someone is happy, sad, scary, mad, gloomy, angelic, and sometimes disturbing.It can also set the mood for certain scenes or themes. In Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton uses low and high key lighting . In the beginning of the movie when Peg entered the mansion on the hill, it was dark and kind of opaque, this shows low key lighting. This shows how dark, gloomy and scary the building is. Diegetic sound is sound that the characters can hear, and nondiegetic are sounds the characters cannot here ,but the audience instead. When Peg was going to the mansion in Edward Scissorhands, there was some dark, eerie music playing. That was an example of non diegetic sound, this helped build the suspense. In Frankenweenie, there as non diegetic sound , when Victor and Sparky were playing with the ball the orchestra is playing music and same when he dies. This shows that everything is happy and fun. When Sparky dies, dark, gloomy music was playing making everything sad. In Vincent, there was examples of diegetic and nondiegetic sound. An example of Diegetic sound is when Vincent is playing the flute. In the short film, Burton uses this to show the normal side of Vincent. When the organ was playing in the background and Vincent changed personalities, that was an example of non diegetic sound. Burton uses this to show the dark side of
