Tim Apodaca's Growing Up In The Classroom

Since Tim Apodaca’s arrival at Highland Park as a teacher (he's also a graduate of HP) I've seen him strive every day to improve his pedagogy, curriculum, and techniques- almost to a fault. What makes him distinguished, however, is his constant quest to improve himself as a professional. Not a day goes by that Tim doesn't stop by my room (To be fair, he is next door to me!) to either bounce an idea off me, or to ask advice, or just to reflect on some situation within the school or class. The investment of this time, for the principal and the staff, is a wise decision for connecting people, talent, and instructional practice to impact an effective learning environment. DuFour’s book, Whatever It Takes: How PLCs Respond When Kids Don’t Learn, promotes PLCs as the “most powerful conceptual model for transforming schools to meet their new challenges,” (p. 2) would address the low test scores, and the low expectations teachers are holding for students at…

One morning I was sitting in my English class when my teacher handed us a piece by Jerome Stern called “What They Learn in School”. I’m not a big reader so I wasn’t too thrilled about reading Stern’s poem. However, I did become curious once I read the first line. Stern began his poem by stating how “In the schools now, they want them to know all about marijuana, crack, heroin, and amphetamines, because then they won 't be interested in marijuana, crack, heroin, and amphetamines.”…

The short stories “Seventh Grade” and “Melting Pot” each has a conflict, either external or internal. “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto has an internal conflict, an internal conflict is a conflict coming from the character's mind. “Melting Pot” by Anna Quindlen has an external conflict between the immigrants that move to the town. The theme of "Growing Up" by Gary Soto is that at some point everyone in the world meets the stage of having new interests and opinions of things and that we aren't all the same, we make mistakes and learn from them. For Example on page 2 of 8 it says, " They would have to wait until the last day before they could go to Great America. It wasn't worth the boredom. " This shows that Maria is beginning to have different ideas of how the trip effects her.(Awesome, Bored, Fun, Horrible etc.) Another example is that on page 8 of 8 it says, " They're heartless, she muttered.…

I am certain that Golden Apple’s teacher preparation program cultivates exceptional teachers who selflessly give back to society, construct a positive environment for children in need, and play a supportive role in students’ lives. Graduates of this program are unparalleled when it comes to classroom instruction and passing on life-altering skills and ideas. This fact resonates with me because I am fortunate to have studied with some of the best teachers in the area, teachers who have impacted my life in tremendous ways, and I believe that a child should not be denied this kind of education due to a lack of resources far beyond their…

I completed my 3-week professional experience at Fredrick Irwin Anglican high school and I am so happy with how it went; I can honestly say that at the end of each day I was there I was always looking forward to returning the following day. Before prac, I was uncertain about continuing my studies as a secondary educator, now I am excited and confident in saying that that I can see myself as a teacher in the future and have my own class of students. I set myself on goal during the three weeks, which was to stand and talk confidently, which in my opinion I accomplished. In the end, I could stand and look from the front of my class, not say a word and get complete silenced from students, Rust my mentor said he was very impressed with it being…
