In Chapter Three, Tilman and his younger sister are born at the turn of the twentieth century in Shoneval, Ontario. Different form his sister Klara, Tilman is a weird, unsociable and eccentric boy, who cannot assimilate into any social groups round him. On page 59, “school [is] impossible for him [because] no one, nothing could make him stay neither the schoolmaster’s switch nor his father’s harsh words.” (59) It is obvious that Tilman cannot blend into any social groups; Additionally, Tilman could not stay in one spot for long time; He is afflicted with wanderlust, which is a strong desire for travelling and exploring the world. Consequently, his family members are worried about him because they do not believe that Tilman can look after himself, especially his mother. This action really breaks his mother’s heart; the disappointment, hurt and sadness lead this poor mother to chain up her only son to a shed for the day and night in order to prevent his departure. However, the imprisonment harms Tilman both physically and mentally. As a result, when his father asks his promise of staying home, “’I won’t stay.’ he [calls] fiercely toward the house. ‘I want to go,’ he [screams], ‘I want to go!’” (69) Meanwhile, Klara feels mad and sympathetic towards her brother who is suffering of the imprisonment, “she [screams] ‘you’re bad, you’re bad, you’re all gone wrong!’” (69) Eventually, she sets Tilman free.
