Love In C. S. Lewis Till We Have Faces

If there is one thing that is universally known and understood, it is love. Love can be that rush of euphoria when someone comes around the corner, or it can be the deep connection one feels for the ones that have been around them nearly their whole life. But overarchingly, love is known as the reason to live. Many books and movies implement love into their texts, as it enhances the book’s plot and hold peoples’ attention. However, books rarely show different contrasting types of love, like selfish or selfless love, instead they concentrate on the passionate kind of love where there is equity. One book that shows both companionate and passionate love, along with their extremes is Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis. Till We Have Faces revolves around the main character, Orual, telling her story within The Kingdom of Glome. Not only does Till We Have Faces show the consequences of extremity but it also shows different sides of love. Typically, love is seen as a romantic type of love. However, this is one of the few texts that mainly includes familial love, and shows that not only can the relationship type of love be harmful, but also with family. Love is also seen to be merely one overarching concept. Yet this shows the different sides, and the contradicting behaviors a feeling can bring about.
