In the fictional adventure short story "Rikki-tikki-tavi," the author Rudyard Kipling relates the struggle that the mongoose Rikki-tikki-tavi has in order to shield his owners from harm. In this short story, Rikki-tikki-tavi lives on the property of an English family in Colonial India in the 1800s. One day, he is rescued from a flood by Teddy, the little boy in the family. At first, Teddy's parents dislike Rikki-tikki, but then he saves Teddy from a deadly snake bite and they accept him into their family. After that, Rikki-tikki overhears and evil cobra named Nag and his wife Nagaina plotting to kill Teddy's whole family to safeguard their eggs. Taking his chance, Rikki-tikki jumps out of his hiding place and bites Nag, making such a racket
