I can see why some people might think this is the theme, but I know this is not it. For instance, if Rikki had known the whereabouts of all the snakes, he would have been able to prepare better for his battles. Another example would be that the family could have been in less danger and could have killed Nag, Nagaina, and Karait if they knew the enemies were coming. With this in mind, don’t forget to think about the snakes. The big man, Teddy, and the Mother also could have prepared better for battle if they were aware Rikki-Tikki was going after them. Also, Darzee and his wife could have prevented their eggs from being stolen and eaten if the bird would have known the cobras like to eat them. There are many reasons why this theme could be correct, but I can still prove it wrong. To begin with, even if Nagaina had known the mongoose was going after her eggs, she would not have been able to stop him. He is much quicker and much stronger, and he was already in the midst of destroying her prized possessions, her unborn babies. Even if she had gotten to him, he would have just attacked her and killed her there instead of outside the bungalow. So, no matter what Nagaina knew, she would have been defeated by Rikki-Tikki. Although it is easy to assume that if he would have known how big of a problem the snakes would be, he could have been more prepared, this is not true. Since it is a mongoose’s natural instinct to kill snakes, Rikki still would have been able to kill them. Either way, the snakes will end up being punished, and they get killed. So, my point is the theme of this story is not “Knowledge can help us prepare for the
