The copepod Tigriopus Californicus is found in splash-pools of laguna beach. (Baker, 1912) The Tigriopus Californicus has many different stages in its lifecycle. The stages go from the Nauplii stage to the Copepodid stage, to finally the Adult stage. Each stage lasts for about one to two days. However, there is an uncertainty of how many additional segments are added to the abdomen. Each stage lasts up to two to four days depending on their environment. As the T. Californicus ages, more appendages appear, as well as more segments. At the fifth stage it is easy to determine their sex, and typically males generally have larger bodies than females (Powlik, 1996).
When the T. Californicus reaches its maturity, they’ll copulate between two to

Nevertheless, breeding has been noted to happen during summer time around May to July at the Pacific Grove in California. Spawning takes place once per breeding season (Ophiothrix SIMoN.) Spiny brittle stars hold no gestation because sperms and eggs are respectively released into water, where the fertilized eggs go through early development and develop into larvae (Hunt.) As stated, even though the eggs and sperms are sometimes retained in the bursae, the fertilized eggs are released into the plankton and invest no parental care. When the eggs hatch, ophioplutei feed themselves for several weeks on plankton and go through metamorphosis to fully develop into adult brittle stars (Brittle…

In our study, we had two controls that we placed the Lumbriculus variegatus into. First, we used spring water to get the normal heart rate of the worms. The other control was a caffeine solution that served as our positive control. Our other solutions that we exposed the worms to consisted of increasing concentrations of two different NSAIDs (ibuprofen and aspirin). For each NSAID, we had a solution equivalent to the recommended dosage for a person based on body weight (the proportional dosage solution), ten times the concentration of this initial solution based on the body weight of the worm, and one-hundred times the concentration of the solution based on the average weight of Lumbriculus variegatus.…

The life history of the blue crab promotes the widespread dispersal of larvae and consequently high levels of connectivity among estuarine populations. This contrasts with the life histories of many other estuarine invertebrates, with retention of larvae within estuaries and greater self-recruitment. The average lifespan of a blue crab is approximately 3.5 years (Tagatz 1968, Millikin and Williams 1984). Sexually mature females mate once, store this sperm, and use it to fertilize up to 18 clutches (Millikin and Williams 1984, Hines et al. 2003, Dickinson et al. 2006) Each clutch can contain approximately 3.5 million eggs (Hsueh et al. 1993), although egg size, clutch volume, and the success of egg development and hatching decrease over the…
