It was late fall and the once colorful leaves on the ground were turning a dismal brown(sight imagery). They made loud crunching sounds(sound imagery) under our feet as my project challenge class walked toward the tightrope course. Chatting with my friends David and Joey, none of us were aware of what was lurking in our futures. Coach Pug was describing the activity that we would be doing, his loud authoritative voice boomed into deaf ears(sound imagery). Only after he said that we would be walking across a tightrope course could I feel my heart race. He split us into groups and told us that we had to make it across the course by the end of class. So I slowly grasped the sweaty handle bars of the zip line and the conductor tightly put the black belt on my waist. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I took one deep breath and started thinking about how much I had to do in life and if I should go on this risk taking ride. Though, my fear was there, I thought about how this zip line wasn’t that long and could probably come back in 2 minutes, and I could always close my eyes which sort of helped to relieve my fears..…

The raindrops trickle down from the peak of my forehead, dance across my eyebrows, and finally take the leap down the 400 foot drop. Adrenaline surges through my veins. Soaked jungle trees completely surround me and pouring rain beats away at every inch of my body, like I am enclosed in the belly of a tsunami. The light Honduran air entraps me while the wind whispers and sings to me in a cold whistled tone. The zip line stretches across the gaping 400 foot drop and I cannot seem to locate the end of the line.…

My heart rate increased as I approached the gate, I was nervous and terrified. I felt singled out with numerous people already looking at me before I even entered the arena. The person in front of me seemed calm and collected and I watched them with so much intent. I watched how the judge moved around their horse and focused and planned each of my moves in advance. As the judge wrote down the person’s score and the person leading their horse to the gate of the side of the arena, I felt tense and unable to move from where I stood.…

I had used all of my strength and energy to keep myself on, and when we when around the bend in the arena I fell off. It felt as if I was launched into the fence from a catapult. My eyes were glued shut when I fell, so I didn’t see what all took place, but I sure felt everything that happened. When I opened my eyes my leg was intertwined in the fence, my right arm was stretched out in the gravel throbbing with pain, and I felt like I had been hit with thirty sandbags.…

A Place to Lay One’s Head From my house up on the ridge, if the cottonwood leaves below have fallen away in the autumn, you can see another smallish house straddling the thin line of the village river. I started building it about five years ago right around Christmas break from school. It is a pit house so the beginnings of it really weren’t about building, but rather about digging.…
