The ideas behind the tide mills were introduced to North America with the settlers. In particular, Maine has seen almost frequent use of tide mills since the eighteenth century. In the later part of the nineteenth century, the concept of tidal power was changed from turning wooden wheels for machinery, to producing electricity.
An engineer by the name of Dexter Cooper in 1920 came up with the idea of making energy from tides, a plan that he envisioned to implement in Passamaquoddy and Cobscook bays. Early funding was strong, but in 1929 and the crash of the stock market but a quick stop to all work being done.
