Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus was born on August 1, 10 BCE. Claudius was the black sheep of the family, he was clumsy, weak and unattractive. His family would make fun and bully Claudius. He was the embarrassment of the family. The family did not realize that he could have been suffering from cerebral palsy, “A condition which impairs muscle coordination, typically caused by damage to the brain before or at birth”(Mayo Clinic). No one cared about Claudius, so he kept to himself. Considering Claudius many disabilities, no one expected he would become emperor, but in the year 41 B.C. he became the new Roman Emperor.

Claudius never received a spot in public office because of his disabilities. Claudius gave up on everything and started to drink and gamble. But when he wasn't abusing alcohol and gambling he was reading books and educating himself. Yet his disease continues to control what he can be capable of.
After Caligula and his family was murdered the Praetorians found Claudius curled up in a ball hiding behind a curtain. Instead of murdering him too, they saluted to him, and they accepted him as the new Roman Emperor. Even though Claudius did have many problems he could not fix he was still extremely clever when he came into office. Claudius was intelligent and was continually learning more. Many people during this time believed that he was lying about having problems and just so happens he was putting on act to protect himself.
