After I graduated from Stanford University in 1895 with a geology degree and I took an engineering job with the British mining company. I traveled the world locating lucrative mineral deposits, and by the age of 27, I had become one of the firm’s four partners. I left the company in 1908 and soon had profitable business interests on every continent except for Antarctica. At fifty three in 1928 I ran…

The year was 2014. I was a senior in high school, already I had committed to go to Colorado Mesa University, I had a track scholarship and I was going to major in Geology, ultimately wanting to go into petroleum engineering. The only thing was, I didn’t want to. I did not want to go be a geologist, I wanted to travel, to see the world! As cliché as it may have been, I dropped out, I worked for a period of time and sent myself on a trip to Europe to “find myself”.…
The sciences have been central to my life ever since I was a child. My mother is a veterinarian and my father a mechanical engineer. Both of my parents attended Tuskegee University and always pushed for me to consider HBCU’s for my education. STEM careers and education are promoted heavily in Huntsville, my hometown, as major tech companies and government entities such as NASA and Missile Defense are located there. I ventured out my senior year and took courses dealing with social sciences, both in my high school and at a nearby university.…

I was born in the Dominican Republic, to parents with education no greater than 8th grade. I have always been fascinated with astronomy, since my dad bought me my first fake telescope, while we were living in Puerto Rico. Receiving Isaac Asimov The Birth and Death of Stars only strengthened this at age 5. Then life got on the way I grew up between Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, completing high school in Santo Domingo, where the concept of doctoral studies was foreign at the time,…

As each year in high school progressed, I found myself wanting to acquire more knowledge and learn about the world around me. To accomplish this, I signed up for college level classes. Although the rigor was challenging, I discovered the classes to be interesting as I learned to apply and synthesize what I was learning with my everyday surroundings. In AP Chemistry I was astounded to learn what my very existence was made of, and in AP Environmental Science I am learning of a love for the environment I never knew I had. Science classes as my school have made it possible for me to explore my interests in science and my environment.…
The abundance of resources provided at universities creates an environment where experience is just as valuable as education. Therefore, receiving hands-on experience is something I am greatly looking forward to in college. Getting outside and getting my hands dirty gathering data and doing fieldwork is something I greatly enjoy doing. In fact, I already have a head start through my Senior Capstone Project centered on collecting, analyzing, and presenting water quality data along a local creek. This project has enriched my interest in the ways water creates a unique situation in the desert completely unlike a typical aquatic ecosystem.…
I will apply knowledge gained through my ecological studies at The Evergreen State College to make positive changes. Since starting my studies here at Evergreen I have stayed true to my course and attended classes that focus largely on past, present, and future environmental issues. By currently participating in a marine science course and attending more ecology courses in the near future I plan on obtaining a Bachelors degree and transferring to a graduate school where I can continue to study. My intentions can be summarized into a few simple words, I intend to achieve more than a label, but a greater understanding of the world around us. I will always strive to leave people I meet, the community I live in, and the world, in an improved state from which I was…

The Zheng He voyages, also known as the “treasure voyages”, were a series of seven Ming dynasty naval voyages that occurred between 1405 and 1433CE. The voyages got the name Zheng He from the commander of the fleet, Admiral Zheng He. The fleet was ordered by Zhu Di, the Yongle Emperor, around the turn of the 15th century. All of the voyages took place during the Yongle era, except for the last, which was launched during the Xuande era. The voyages traveled much of the South China Sea, as well as visiting the Indian Ocean and other distant locations.…

The summer before 6th grade, I was introduced to what would become one of the greatest passions I have in life: geology. This realization occurred while I visited the Grand Canyon and Garden of the Gods National Parks in the western United States. Consequently, while I explored these natural wonders, I found I wanted to discover and know the secrets these rocks held about their geological history, their specific formations, and other geological wonders such as the Tibetan Plateau and the Door to Hell in Turkmenistan. My career path as a budding geoscientist had begun. After this vacation, I enrolled myself in more Earth Science classes, read geology textbooks in my spare time, and volunteered at the local science museum to assist with general exhibits as well as ongoing geology summer camps for young children.…
