This year Tia Chucha’s is elated to have turned 15. And like any coming of age, any significant milestone, it is a time to honor and celebrate what this represents.

In the Mexican tradition, when a young woman turns 15, this special year of her life is recognized with a quinceañera. This is a very special occasion, an opportunity to present the young person to the larger community. This is also a delicate occasion, one where care is taken to surround the young person with people who she can call on to counsel and support her continued development. She, in consultation with relatives and trusted friends, humbly asks particular people in her community to be her quinceañera sponsors. Some will be women, Madrinas, others will be men, Padrinos; all who accept this special role pledge to contribute needed resources to ensure this day is one of abundance and beauty.

Another featured program is In the Words of Womyn (ITWOW), which strives to create and foster a safe space in which women explore and develop identities as writers. Other workshops and activities also include Mexica ("Aztec") dance, indigenous cosmology/philosophy, and weekly open mic nights (a few nights in Spanish, the other nights in English). We host author readings, film screenings, and art exhibits at the center, as well as events out in the community such as our Annual Celebrating Words Festival, which is a free event open to the community that features information and service booths from other organizations in the community, a mix of live poetry readings and music, as well as food
