Ultrasound, is used to determine if a nodule is solid or fluid filled (cystic), the precise size of the nodule, to identify suspicious nodules from benign. In general, it is used when a fine needle biopsy is needed, used to monitor thyroid nodules that do not require surgery.7
Thyroid scintigraphy is recommended to evaluate calcitonin level in a case of clinical suspicion of medullary cancer, nondiagnostic Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) with no further plans for surgery in children. It helps classify nodules as either “cold” or “hot” depending on their iodine-trapping function.4,5
Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB). FNAB is a highly sensitive and accurate test in differentiating benign lesions from malignant nodules and should be used in pediatric patients when possible to accurately diagnosis nodule.5
