The first impact the setting had on the character was when jerry first went to his vacation and walked onto the shore he knew this place really well. “Going to the shore on the first morning of the vacation, the young English boy stopped at a turning of the path and looked down at a wild and rocky bay, and then over the crowded beach he knew so well from other years” (29). This is how jerry journey through the tunnel began. Jerry Figured that If He went through this tunnel he would prove to himself and others. That even though he was 11 he was becoming a big boy now. “They were big boys, men, to Jerry. He dived, and they watched him” (31).He would go under water to prove he was a big boy to. A symbol that this story show is that wanting to not grow up fast is not so bad after all. “ It was no longer of the least importance to go to the bay” (36).
