Emeli Sande’s song “Read All About It,” gives me encouragement for the future. Lastly the sample artwork from Claudia Rankine’s book “Citizen” has been added to my mixtape. My literally mixtape is composed of the principles that carried me from my past and the knowledge that is helping me to build my future. The first track of the mixtape is always the most important because an art relies on the first track as his/her artistic introduction to the world. The first track of my mixtape is titled, “Principles.” “Principles” is my first track because they are the foundation of my life. I used the quote, “If who I am is what I have and what I have is lost, then who am I?” as the prime example of establishing a fundamental basis. Suppose you base your life on money or financial status, money is a superficial object, which can be removed from your life at any moment. Another superficial foundation is your family. Although your family would appear to be a good foundation, your family is only human and has the ability to shift their position in your life at any moment. On page seventy-four of “Citizen” by Claudia Rankine there is an image by Mel Chin titled, “Volume X No.5 Black Angel”. In this image, a black female angel can be seen crouched down on a pedestal, being supported by another statue. At the foot of the pedestal appears to be a group of various gremlins and animals. Behind the woman, a man kneels on two steps. When I saw this image, my mind immediately transported to the power and the beauty of the black woman. Reading the title of this image “Volume X No. 5 Black Angel,” I thought about the angelic qualities of black women. In this third section of my mixtape, I want to remind everyone of the importance and beauty of the African American women. Becoming an Ob/GYN is about so much more than being a doctor. I want to use my platform to help women advance to the next level, but how can I encourage other women without first encouraging myself? The image reminds me that no matter what obstacle you may face, black angels have the ability to rise above challenges, transgression and oppression. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie says, “We raise girls to cater to the fragile egos of men. We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We tell girls you can have ambition but not too much.
