Over time the scholars have developed many theories on stress. This paper is going to focus on three of those theories: person-environment fit theory, the ethological theory, and the crisis theory. Writers own definition on stress is introduced, and the different factors that have affected writer during the stressful time in her life. Furthermore, three stressors are discussed that may affect a nursing profession and the stress management techniques that could reduce those stressors. Person-environment fit theory focuses on the effects of environmental stress and how a person manages said stress. According to C.L. The first few months I would not admit that I was stressed, I thought I was handling the situation very well. That is until I ended up in a hospital with sleep deprivation. That was my wake-up call to start building my knowledge on how to handle stress. Three stressors that I may encounter in the nursing profession are: role performance stressor, self-esteem stressor, and the stress in the workplace. According to J.E. Onyskiw, a person throughout their life undergoes many role changes. One of those role changes is a role conflict (Potter & Perry, 2014 pp.402-403) For example, a conflict in finding time to care for family and for the patients like nurse would have to do. Trying to have enough energy between the both, the role conflict arises (Potter & Perry, 2014). “Individuals with high self-esteem are generally more resilient and are better able to cope with demands and stressors than are those with low self-esteem.” (Onyskiw, 2014, pp.403) Having a high self-esteem can give nurses a confidence they need to be able to perform their duties …show more content…
Such as, working different work shifts in a short time period, working mostly night shifts, fear of failure, and not having an adequate support system to ask for guidance. All these stressors cause an emotional exhaustion called burnout (Potter & Perry, 2014 pp.485). In order to help the role performance stressors, time management is vital. Setting aside time for most important tasks that cannot be put away. Also the tasks that do not require our immediate attention can be put aside for when there is more time available (Potter & Perry, 2014 pp. 484). Asking family members to help out can free more of our time to participate in activates with our families. According to Baier and Hegadoren, a regular exercise program improves muscle tone and posture, controls weight, reduces tension, and promotes relaxation (Potter & Perry, 2014). Regular exercise also improves mood and people tend to feel better about themselves, which in turn improves their self-esteem. Baier and Hegadoren, also state that for a fitness program to have a positive physical effects, a person should exercise 3 to 4 times for 20 to 30 minutes (Potter & Perry,
