Volunteer Hours Today Jenna and I volunteered at the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society. We spent three hours walking the dogs and playing with the kittens. At first I was hesitant to spend three hours at the humane society, but the time went by faster than I had assumed. The first place I went in the shelter was the older dog room, and instantly I was taken aback by how many dogs there were. There was this one older dog snuggled up in the back of the kennel, it had the most depressing look on its face and all I wanted to do was hug it…

On December 6,1865,President Lincoln abated slavery stating that all slaves would be freed and no longer be forced to work for no reward. In our own country today, however, many students across the nation are being forced to do just that, work for no reward. In the article “Required Volunteerism;School Program Tested” by Michael Winerip, It shows that in just two schools alone,175 students are at risk of not graduating because they did not give in to the volunteer program. Didn’t we learn from our mistakes; just because we changed the name, doesn’t mean we changed the game! Volunteering is to go out of your way to help others, but this is just doing what’s required, and therefore, the practice of making kids volunteer for a grade should be stopped.…

I am continuing my volunteer work at the Grace Resources Center to serve the homeless by helping with the Emergency Grocery Program and Hot Meals Program. Additionally, I am currently enrolled in a Certified Nurse Assistant training program at St. Joseph’s Nursing School. After completing the program in August, I plan to work full-time while continuing my volunteer work. In the program, some of the things I am learning are the foundations of resident care, personal care and rehabilitation and restorative care skills which will allow me to learn how to deliver patient care. Being a Certified Nurse Assistant would enable me to gain clinical skills, to learn how to deliver quality patient care and to practice holistic care principles.…

We believe that there is nothing similar to the home away from home affect and we want to be able to help give this feeling to others. Amici Camping Charity is a charity that works to send children of all ages attend camps, and are currently partnered with over 25 camps including camps that Greenwood is partners with such as Medeba and Kilcoo. Another similar facet of service in New Albany that I have been a part of is the Village Coalition Against Hunger food pantry. Whenever my neighbor, who was, in fact, the founder of this program, was short staffed or needed some capable bodies to organize the pantry, my brother and I would jump into action. In addition to the food pantry, my family and I would make “bread runs,” bringing unsold food at the Giant Eagle to the local YMCA branch. Lastly, in New Albany, and through National Honor Society, I have participated in several charity and volunteering events ranging from the bake sales to the Market Street tree lighting ceremony; I am also in charge of a nature clean-up project that will remove the litter and trash build-up in our beautiful parks and trails. In a community that deserves as much as it gives, and in a school that elevates so many, it has been and is my absolute honor to contribute to the wellbeing of the people of New…

If only there would have been more people volunteering, then so much more people could have been helped. And if more people can be help, then the suffering on earth can be ease. The big problem is that everyone is so busy with their personal life that they forget about the importance of helping others. A positive aspect I saw was that those who were already volunteering were really dedicated and kind hearted. I believe they are making a big impact on every person they touched and made it a task to spread their kindness.…

During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…
