In every short story theme is the key to understanding the true meaning the author is trying to get at for the reader. The reader will acknowledge the theme all throughout the short story, from the beginning to the end the story will come together to form the theme. Today the reader will focus on three stories and tell what the theme is for each of the three short stories. The three stories are “The Story of an Hour”, “Where Are You Going,Where Have You Been, and “Doe Season”. The theme for “The Story of an Hour” is “forbidden joy of independence”(Sparknotes 1). Connie is dependent on her family for telling her what not to do and what to do. But Connie then tries to make her appearance grown up like and sexy, Connie goes down to the dinner and starts talking to these boys. They like what they see and she starts to feel the boys eyes on her. She is exploring the idea of the way she looks towards the new side of her all grown up like. However, when Arnold Friend shows up her exploring is always tied down and feels like she needs to be cautious with him. Arnold Friend treats and talks to Connie like she’s a mature woman yanking her out from her childhood. Telling her “I’m your lover. You don’t know what that is but you will’. Arnold confuses and makes Connie fear her quest for being independent. The search for being independent gets Connie in a lot of trouble with the wrong people. Andrea is a nine year old girl who her dad calls Andy. Her dad has always wanted a son but never had one, so he treats Andy like she is. He takes her hunting with a friend of his named Charlie and his son Mac. Throughout the story Andy remembers going on vaction to the ocean in New Jersey. She thinks it smells like death and is terrified to go swim in it. At one point her mom 's bathing suit came off and her breast were freely out and Andy felt embarrassed. She didn’t want to accept the fact like soon one day she will become a woman just like her mother. Later on in the story Andy is the first out of the three to spot a doe. Her dad is so proud of her for being the first one so he tells her she can shoot it. Charlie makes a big seen saying she 's too young when really he’s saying that because she is a girl. Andy shoots the doe and everyone thinks it’s dead. But it’s not and Charlie is the first one to make Andy feel terrible for wounding it and not killing it. It was then that Andy had felt remorse for what she had done. Soon later they had found the doe and it bleed out from the shot Andy had made, her father started to cut the doe from the bellybutton to the crotch. Andy then felt disgusted and wanted nothing to do with them, everyone called her name but from then on she would not go by Andy but by Andrea. That day she figured out her true identity as a young girl growing into a
