Judaism, Islam and christianity are the three central religious traditions that dominate the west. There are some people who even argue that islam grew from Christianity and Judaism. However through the west there are a few facts that hold true, such as monotheist religions, God is the creator, and the world will end in a final judgment, just to name a few. Also within the western world, there are strong beliefs revolving around history. The new world view is that history is something we can use to change the future. Regardless of the beliefs that are held, it is safe to say that these three practices have been some of the main driving forces in shaping the life of the western world.

The term Islam itself means “of the book,” and the followers of this religion, called Muslims means one who submits to God. The leader of Islam, Muhammad, lived from 570-637 CE. During his life, he lived in the city of Mecca, where his father passed before he was born. He fled from Mecca to the city of Medina in 622 CE on a journey called a hijrah, that eventually culminated in Jerusalem. Following his death in 632, the religion of Islam spread throughout the middle east and north Africa. Within the religion of islam, there exists what are known as the five pillars of Islam. These are shahada- I bear witness, therefor is no god but Allah and Muhammad his proffit. Salat-the act of praying five times a day. Zakat- giving 2.5% of your total wealth. Ramadan- a month long fast. Finally there is Hajj- a trip to Mecca. Within islam there exists a strong code of ethics as well. This includes actions such as all are equal, economic humility, provide for the most needy, men and women are equal, but distinct. It is this strong code of ethics that I believe sets Islam apart from their religious counterparts, due to the fact that there is proof that the five pillars are followed. By this I mean all the muslim friends I have, like two people, follow these rules to the best of their ability, while the christian and jewish friends I have seem to maintain the ability to pick and choose what you should and should not follow, which really puts things into
