The conservative model states that family decline ends with “father absence, school failure, poverty, crime, and drug use (Giele, 1996, p. 55). When Giele’s data was recorded in 1996, 36% of children were living apart from their fathers (p. 56). This lack of another parent leads to less supervision of children and the devolpent of unhealthy habits as well as juvenile delinquency (p. 56). Dr. Paul Vitz, psychology professor at Stanford University, explains that Research shows that while delinquency, drug abuse, and theft are not exclusively related to children of divorcees, a larger percent of those children are from divorced parents (1998). This stems from the fear and anxiety divorce instills in the children involved (Vitz, 1998). This initial fear leads to a “significant number of the children to suffering fear, worry, sadness, feelings of rejection, loneliness, anger and guilt” (Vitz, 1998). In America where “freedom reigns” people have a right to do whatever they want within the boundaries of the law. Marrying or having children with whomever one wants to be a right that Americans have, it would be impossible to simply ask people to make the “right” decisions regarding their family choices.
In conclusion, the conservative view on family decline is that straying from religion and a strong moral conduct leads to family breakdown and in turn absent fathers, poverty, and delinquency. The quick to satisfy solutions of the current generation leads to dissolvent of future family bonds and a continuation of family decline. It is the repeated and grossing numbers of these families that cause this nation to struggle and sink further into debt and despair. With no real and practical way to prevent or help the mindset of future generations the cycle of decline will continue through the generations to
