Three Parenting Styles Of Cognitive Development

Cognitive development relates to the ability of children and adolescent to think and reason, according to Stanford’s Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. As children grows they begin to think more concrete. In adolescence, children begin to think more complex such as reasoning and developing their own thoughts, forming a personal code of ethics, planning for the future, and developing their own ideas, and during this time cognitive development can be effected by the way parents treat and raise their children. Physical abuse, mental abuse, and neglect has been shown to have a negative effect on early brain. These effects can follow a child into adolescents and adulthood according to The Child Welfare Information Gateway, Parenting styles are identified in three different styles by phycologist Diana Baumrind. These three major parenting styles are: authoritarian, permissive and authoritative. Authoritarian parenting styles are strict, demanding, but low responsiveness. These parents may demand their children to follow strict rules and may even threaten punishment but they have low responsiveness to their children need. Permissive parenting is a low demanding and high in responsiveness. These parents do not have goals or limits, and, they may neglect their children needs.
