Nuclear Power Opinion Paper-Three Mile Island: Rough Copy

Three Mile Island (TMI) is a nuclear power plant located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, running since 1974. In 2019, the Exelon Corporation plans to shut down Three Mile Island, an essential role in the economy that produces a large amount of Pennsylvania's electricity. This is because because they haven’t been profitable for the past 5 years, and have lost more than $300 million along the way. Not only have they been losing money, the company is facing slow demand for electricity and competition from cheaper natural gas replacements. TMI employs more than 675 people, already with a salary 36% higher than the average amount of employers in the area. "Today is a difficult day, not just for the 675 talented men and women who have dedicated themselves to operating Three Mile Island safely and reliably every day, but also for their families, the communities and customers who depend on this plant to produce clean energy and support local jobs," CEO of Exelon, Chris Crain stated. The company made an appeal for the state of Pennsylvania to bail out their debts based on the success and value

These alternatives include wind power, solar power, and hydropower. With wind power, the amount of supply is inconsistent. They make a lot of noise, need big open spaces to be built on, and windmill farms are only available in certain states. Not only are they unattractive and inconvenient, they affect the wildlife around them. Birds are likely to come into contact with the turbines. It’s not just the blades that pose a risk to birds, wind developments can disrupt migration routes. If we replaced the TMI power plant with windmills, it could affect the bird species, especially bald eagles, which are already in risk of being

Nuclear Question: Should Australia Partake Almost 40% of all enriched uranium begins its half-life in Australia but none of this is being used to generate energy in Australia. This is mostly due to the negative stigma that accompanies nuclear power. The fear of meltdowns, accidents and sabotage has lead the general populace to influence legislation against the use of nuclear power. Their fears, however, are unfounded as nuclear power is profitable, efficient and above all safe.…

This will play a key role in designing engines for use with ethanol which will be discussed later. Despite these advantages, Ethanol does have one key disadvantage; that it is not as energy dense as other fuels. As can be seen in the table to the left, the decrease in ethanol content results in increase in energy content. Alternative energy is an issue with implications at the local, national, and international levels.…

After the Three Mile Island incident the NRC cracked down rigorously on safety protocol. They emphasized training employees to handle the equipment delicately and strategized worst case scenarios that could result from another nuclear meltdown. Even though they tightened their leach on nuclear construction there was still controversy over whether or not production was even worth the risk. Nuclear energy took a step back from their accelerated production to address each issue one at a time. In 1982 the Nuclear Waste Policy Act (NWPA) established a site to deposit all high level hazardous waste.…

    Pros And Cons Of TMI

I think we should keep TMI(Three Mile Island) because the positives outweigh the cons. In my opinion, keeping TMI would be a good idea because of the amount of energy it can produce. If they closed TMI then a lot of people would lose their jobs. TMI produces emission free energy unlike coal or other fuels. If TMI closes, then Pennsylvania's main source of energy would be coal or propane which is very bad for the air.…

The reader is most aware of the downfalls of nuclear power because that is what the media conveys to the public. The Three Mile Island incident is brought up more than once in this article and most people are familiar with this because it made worldwide news in 1979. A small portion of the text is a review, but most of it is new information. One piece of information that caught my eye was the portion that discussed the Obama administration: “President Obama eliminated funding… for the state-of-the-art nuclear waste storage facility at Yucca Mountain, Nevada” (Stieglitz and Docksai 17). Nearly all of the statistics were new information.…

NUCLEAR POWER OR NO? I am against nuclear power as a main source of power in Thomasville. The first reason i would be against it is the risk of something happening and their being a nuclear fallout which would make thomasville and places around it a hazard area and no-one be allowed inside. The second reason i would be against it is that the waste that comes from having nuclear. All the waste that comes off of it would have to be stored in cement vaults under the ground and if a earthquake happens it that could all leak out and be hazzard for thousands of years. The third and final reason i would be against it is that the waste that has to be transported to be buried would be a big target for terrorist.…

In conclusion, i agree with the people to not shut down Three Mile Island. We have more benefits than disadvantages. Therefore if you decide to shut TMi down us as a community will go downhill, we will have a hard time adjusting to the change, the building will still be there for many years until you figure out something to do with it, so why not just spare all the drama and time it would take to shut it down and let us be the way we are used…

These windmill farms can produce enough renewable energy to support a small town all on just wind energy. There is also hydroelectricity, this uses water to power buildings without having to use fossil fuels like consumers have been. The reason everyone doesn’t switch to renewable energy is that of the cost it includes for installing windmills or solar panels. People don’t realize that it may cost more now but what you save on your electric bill from a renewable source like the sun, there would be no electricity bill. Creating your own electricity would save you…

Nuclear energy should not be a resource after what happened in Japan on 11 march 2011. That day a Nuclear power plantation has been destroyed by an earthquake in Japan. It causes radiation all around Japan and many people died. It doesn't matter if the disaster happened on Japan just because Japan is known for tsunami, earthquake, storm surge, and floods. This global warming situation is out of control for everybody so this can happen anywhere and if any natural causes hit any nuclear power plant it's going to be really bad for everybody like what happen to the nuclear power plant called the Fukushima crisis.…

The use of nuclear power has been under debate for many years; with issues such as environmental impact, safety, cost, waste management, and efficiency, the cons clearly outweigh the pros. Nuclear power plants have been supplying electricity to the population for nearly 60 years, but all things must come to an end as better options emerge and humanity develops as a species. It 's only natural for things to become outdated, or be replaced by better options as they become available. Nuclear power is a source of energy, created through a reaction when a uranium atom is split, releasing heat that is used to produce electricity. It was initially used as an alternative to coal, as coal-burning facilities were becoming a hazard to the environment.…
