There are 3 major plate boundaries where earthquakes occur: convergent, divergent, and transform. Each of these boundaries cause earthquakes in their own unique way: convergent earthquakes occur when two plates hit each other directly on any of their sides, divergent earthquakes occur when two plates move away from each other, and earthquakes that come from transform boundaries occur when two plates slide past each other.
