Tobias Wolff's Hunters In The Snow

Heavy snow can alter vision and can make it so people cannot see what is right in front of them. Often times, this can happen with people, too. People tell lies to deceive those around them, and make themselves seem like better people than they actually are. The short story “Hunters in the Snow” by Tobias Wolff is a good example of this. The theme of the story is that people will lie about themselves because they feel insecure, and want people to think they are better than they actually are. The three main characters, Kenny, Frank, and Tub, all live lies in hopes that they will be viewed highly. These men are supposed to be friends, and friends are not supposed to keep secrets from each other. They do, though, so that they will appear to be …show more content…
They use the lies to deceive those around them because they are insecure about their own lives. In the same way that the snowy atmosphere impairs the hunters’ vision and hearing, their lies impair how people view them. Kenny pretends he is content with his own life, but he puts others down to make himself look better. Frank lies about his secret affair so no one will judge him. Tub lies about his glands so people will not think he is a gluttonous person. They lie to make themselves seem like better people, because they are insecure with their true selves. Towards the end of the story it says, “The snowfall lightened and the clouds began to roll back off the fields.” (168). Around this time in the story, Frank and Tub were coming clean about their secrets. Once they knew that they would not be judged for their secrets, they shared them. Just how the snow clears and helps the men see better, the secrets clear and help the men see their friends for who they actually are. This brings them closer, and hopefully makes them feel more secure about their real lives. On the other hand, Kenny never comes clean about his lie, which destroys him. He gets shot, and his friends do not really care that much. Perhaps if he would have told his friends the truth, they would have been more apt to help

Mirta Ojio’s book Hunting Season, Immigration and Murder in an All-American Town is based on a true story of an immigrant’s murder that turned a small American town on Long Island village of Patchogue into a war zone for immigration rights. In this critical reflection paper, I will discuss and analyze three key issues or themes that were represented in the Hunting Season and elaborate how these concepts connect with those of Governing Immigration through Crime by Dowling and Inda. The first concept is that of the Membership Theory, a theory which “limits individual rights and privileges to the members of a social contract between the government and the people” (Dowling & Inda,2013). The Membership theory often marks out boundaries of who is an accepted member of society and who isn’t, which was demonstrated in Hunting Season when Marcelo Lucero traveled from Ecuador to Long Island.…

Lying is a sin everyone commits in their lifetime; often on multiple occasions, and is a prevalent theme in today’s society. At times, it is human tendency to lie to avoid trouble, difficult situations, spare others feelings, and enhance social status. In some cases, it seems as though lying is the only option a person has or possibly the best alternative. But a lie has the ability to do more harm than good especially in valuable relationships. In the novel The Girl on the Train, author Paula Hawkins explores the devastating consequences lying has on treasured connections and all areas of a relationship.…

The main idea of "The Lie" by Kurt Vonnegut is that it is important for there to be a balance of trust and communication between family members so that they avoid being dishonest to each other and themselves. For example, the text reads, "'I wonder how many Remenzels have gone to Whitehill,' said Sylvia. 'That's like asking how many people are dead in a cemetery,' said the doctor... ' All of 'em'" (Vonnegut 2). This evidence proves that attending Whitehill was not an option for Eli, it was a set expectation that he would go.…

Tannen, a teacher at Georgetown University provides the public with scholarly research in the battlefield of communication between the sexes; bringing to light the stereotypical debate to whom is at fault in the negative communicational skills that endanger relationships. Stephanie Ericsson, in “The Ways We Lie,” a cover article from a 1993 issue of the Utne Reader, references life experiences, classifications, and quotes to rationalize the human need to lie. Ericsson, a screenwriter, a copywriter, and a recovering addict uses personal experiences to persuade readers that lying is an art form that cannot be lived without sending the assumption that lying is as vital to life as air is to breathing. Ericsson states “Sure I lie, but it doesn’t hurt anything.”…

Deceit and Betrayal Every living human being has been deceived at least once in their lifetime. In Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, the people of Messina face a time in their lives where their lives revolve around nothing but pure deceit. Deceiving someone doesn’t always seem like a nice thing to do to, however, good things may come out of it to bring certain information out in the light.…

In “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson she discusses and breaks down the activity of lying into different kinds of lies. Ericsson goes into great detail of about 10 of them, but there are many more. Some lies are for your peace of mind and maybe still bad for both parties, and some are for the better of someone else’s feelings. Ericsson believes that even if you feel you are perfect, nobody is and still tell lies no matter big or small, we do it and at times are unaware that it is considered a lie. Individuals nowadays get to a point where they are lying and don’t know whether to believe themselves or others.…

“The trouble with lying and deceiving is that their efficiency depends entirely upon a clear notion of the truth that the liar and deceiver wishes to hide” -Hannah Arendt. This quotation expresses the way lying is a coverup for a bigger problem that someone wishes to hide. Lying is done on purpose in order to deceive someone just like in the novel The Girl on the Train. In this novel, characters such as the protagonist, Rachel, an alcoholic and Tom, Rachel’s ex husband both play a role in deceiving others. In The Girl on the Train Hawkins examines the way which lying dismantles people’s communication, creates distance, establishes obstacles, clouds the truth, and breaks up communication through the relationships of Anna and Tom, Rachel and…

Most lies told are for the purpose of protecting one’s reputation. As seen in The Crucible, many main characters lie in order to protect their reputation. According to David J. Ley, Ph.D., most people who constantly tell lies “are often worried about losing the respect of those around them. They want you to like them, be impressed, and value them. And they’re worried that the truth might lead you to reject or shame them”…

One reason people lie is to make themselves look suitable to others, or they want other people to believe they are worthy enough to have a conversation with.
