My Freshman Year by Rebekah Nathan is a non-fiction book that Nathan, an anthropology professor, wrote about her study she did when she enrolled in a college university as a freshman student. This book is an excellent example of how students learn because we see how Nathan learns as a student as well as getting an insight look at how her classmates learn. In one instance, Harry and his two friends, Ron and Hermione, wanted to find out if Malfoy, another student at the school, was the Heir of Slytherin but they didn’t know how to prove it. Hermione suggested this one potion that they could use to transform into someone else so they could sneak in and question Malfoy without him knowing; but since no one has ever made it before, no one knew how to make it. Hermione went to the library and took out the book that had the potion’s recipe. Even though she claimed, “This is the most complicated potion I’ve ever seen,” she learned exactly how to make the potion by simply reading the recipe (Rowling 165). Hermione followed the recipe as stated and after rereading the recipe to ensure she did it right, they added the last ingredient and completed the potion. Once they drank the potion, it worked just as the book stated it would. Harry and Ron both transformed into Malfoy’s best friends, Goyle and Crabbe. The potion that Hermione just learned how to make worked so flawlessly that Rowling affirmed, “Ron was indistinguishable from Crabbe” (217). Reading the recipe proved to be a significant part in successfully making the potion and finding out key information about the Heir of

While deliberating over what specific personal experience I should use for the purpose of this essay, I thought deeper about how ethical decision making plays a huge role in my life. It’s even bigger than I often realize. I do not picture myself as being one who has to go above and beyond in order to show integrity through my actions; it is simply just who I am, and how I believe all of the world should be. This viewpoint that I have on decision making in life can be shown through my actions during this previous high school rodeo state finals.…

Should schools have balanced schedule or all year round schooling? No, there are many disadvantages to having a balanced calendar. Some of these reasons are it still takes about the same amount of time throughout the year to reteach information forgotten from breaks, it is hard to find a babysitter for short intervals of time rather than a big block of time with a high school student wanting a job, and lastly students having a summer job is almost completely eliminated. The number one reason for school turning away from the balanced schedule is because the main reason they went to them is to reduce the learning curve (summer slide), where student forgot information over their 12 week break.…

It was an extremely easy choice for me when we were told to pick our topic for the senior project. I immediately decided that I wanted to focus on the injustice that the elderly have been experiencing for quite some time now concerning depression and other mental illnesses. Researching and studying the causes and effects that elderly depression can have has truly been an eye opening experience. It has been fascinating seeing why psychologists and therapists have generally been glazing over the growing problem that is elderly depression. My path for this project has been a relatively smooth one.…

I just have to,” I told my father during our first tour of Colorado Mesa University’s campus. “I already feel like a Maverick,” I admitted as I straightened out my new CMU ball cap from the campus bookstore. It was a strange feeling knowing that I would no longer be Lakeland High School’s most spirited student, but there was excitement in knowing that I would soon show my pride for Colorado Mesa. Images of my blue and white spirit wear quickly changed to be maroon and gold.…

Throughout this school year I have shown mastery and improvement on many skills. These skills have ranged from being able to identify, fix, and avoid common grammar errors, to being able to synthesize information into one focused argument. After going through the school year and showing my expertise on these topics through many assignments, I believe that I should receive credit for Sophomores Honors English. The first learning target that I think I have shown a great deal of improvement on was being able to identify, fix and avoid common grammar errors.…

The traditional school year has been in practice for decades and in this time, has shown that it is greatly successful. To switch to year-round schooling would overall be incredibly inconvenient for each person involved. The traditional school year should remain in Niagara because in comparison to year-round schooling it is less expensive, more convenient for parents, and offers more opportunities for students. Funding for education is expensive enough as is, and possibly making the school year longer could alter these costs. To fund education all school staff must be paid, which includes teachers, secretaries, and janitors.…

I became an adult on Monday, June 15, 2015 during my AP Writing class, standing in the sweltering heat, completing 50% of my term 4 grade. It was a Moth presentation, based on the Moth radio hour. We all had to plan out a story to tell, something personal with a message that would resonate universally. I swallowed my fear and an illusion of pride, looked out at the teenagers I had spent years of classes with and, in short, told them the truth. For those five to seven minutes I let my façade slip…

This school year I enjoyed this English class because it was not very difficult, but it was not easy at all. This year we did so many assignments and some of them were analyzing poems, emulating poems, writing a theme of a poem, presenting a speech in class and then working as a group to create a chapter. I believe that I have grown throughout this school year. I have grown as a listener because back then I was not used to listening to poems without having a paper right in front of me.…
