Dr. Absher’s lecture highlighted several important aspects to remember as I begin my new role. First, it is important to always remember that I will be judged by my professionalism. Often times, patients believe professionalism trumps medical knowledge. According to Absher (2016), professionalism sets the stage for the patient’s interaction with the provider. Secondly, the lecture revealed how important it is for the provider to have good etiquette. Providers are encouraged to incorporate good etiquette. In return, it will help gain a competitive edge and assist them in building their patient population. The lecture highlighted the importance of dressing and acting professional at all times. It is vital to understand that cultures will view etiquette differently. Body language is an instrumental part of a person’s nonverbal communication. What was the most surprising information you learned?
I was amazed to learn how relaxed dress attire has shown an increase in flirtatious behavior, tardiness, and the formation of more cliques within the workplace. Research shows that employees are less focused and are less committed to their jobs when relaxed dress is allowed (Absher, 2016). Casual dress puts people in a different mindset, and a less structured atmosphere is the outcome. I was also surprised to learn that wearing scrubs is discouraged because it is hard for the patient to distinguish between the various caregivers. I personally had never heard of the first 12 rules until this lecture and I found it to be interesting. The concepts behind the first 12 rules makes sense, especially the first 12 words that come out of your mouth. This rule definitely reinforces how important first impressions
