The three key goals victims can pursue through the criminal justice system are punishment, treatment and restitution.
Punishment- Most victims would like to see the justice system make examples of offender to provided deterrence as a way to prevent other crimes. Victims also so see punishment as a way to feel satisfied that the offender is getting the payback for what they deserve. I was once told be a victim that watching the offender suffer made her felt better and that he might think twice next time about what he did. The downside to punishment can cause a huge financial burden on the State and can also leads to a very high incarceration rate. Most time punishment are unproductive because the same offenders end up reoffending.
