The Choose My Plate website provided by the U.S. government provides a way to plan, track, and compare meals based on the nutrients needed by the individual. Using the Super Tracker to track my food for the last 3 days and comparing it to what should be eaten was an eye opening experience.
My eating habits at this time include eating quite a bit of fast food and prepackaged food. I skip breakfast most mornings and have only a cup of coffee. I may eat a piece of fruit and then I work 3 or 4 hours before I get a snack of maybe a piece of fried chicken from KFC and a biscuit. The six types of nutrients are water, carbohydrates, minerals, proteins, vitamins, and fats. Water is needed to regulate body temperature and to provide the means for nutrients to travel throughout your body. Drinking too little water leads to dehydration. One of the symptoms I suffer from by not drinking enough water is headaches. (Jegtvig, 2013) I lack vitamin D in my diet as well as calcium. Vitamin D helps regulate calcium levels and helps keeps bones strong and healthy. My low levels of both vitamin D and calcium make me at greater risk for bone fractures and osteoporosis. (Kent, 2011) My health is compromised, because I do not eat of the right foods to get enough calcium, pottassium and iron. Low levels of these minerals cause soft bones, lack of energy, cramps and fatigue; all of which I experience. (Kent, 2011)
Tracking my food intake has made me more concious of how much and what I am eating. I have decided to include more whole grains, more dairy products and less protein and less carbohydrates and empty calories. I am making smarter decisions about what I eat
