One Dark Throne Blake Analysis

The story “One Dark Throne,” by Kendare Blake is a sequel to the book “Three Dark Crowns.” This story takes place on an island named Fennbirn where three queens battle for the throne. Each queen has a unique ability, Mirabella is an elemental so she controls the elements. Katherine is poisoner so she is immune to poison. Then there is Arsinoe who is supposed to be a naturalist, where she has a familiar--an animal companion-- but she is truly a poisoner. The three queens are willing to do whatever to kill one another to win the throne and become the next queen of Fennbirn. The small theme of family runs through the story, but a complex theme can also be seen which is, whether family is blood related or not they will be there and care for you, but they can still turn on you.

The part where family being with you can be seen when Mirabella tries to save Arsinoe by telling her to run. Then Arsinoe sort of turns on her in not a necessarily bad way but says, “You run. Save yourself. They have already caught me,” That shows Arsinoe cares for Mirabella and since she thinks she is already caught she still thinks Mirabella should live. Another moment is when Katherine challenges Arsinoe and Mirabella to hunt. That shows how family can turn on you because out of the blue Katherine showed she wanted to kill Arsinoe, “I challenge the queens to a hunt.” I think after the first book Katherine changed into the family member that was sort of the outcast because she no longer cares for her sisters and just wants the throne. If family can turn on you, and Arsinoe and Katherine are family, then Katherine can turn on Arsinoe. This shows the relationships that can be changed throughout families. It also shows that families aren’t always perfect, but if you find the right people you can make your own

I chose the story of (In Cuba I Was a German Shepherd) because at first when I quickly looked at both stories I found that the story I chose had many meaning and events that happened to us as a Syrians when we left our country because of the war and how our lives changed overnight from one thing to another completely different, a new society, new people and a different life. The story sometimes made me cry, especially when I read some sentences that represented my case personally. (late in the night after several glasses of wine, someone would start the stories that began with "In Cuba I remember.") 1 (In Cuba, the stories always began, life was good and pure.…
