A good minister of Jesus Christ is one who is an exhorter, educator, and an exemplar. The Apostle Paul lays out many attributes that someone needs to be a minister of Christ. These three encapsulate the rest of the qualities required found in the books of I Timothy, II Timothy and Titus. In these books, Paul is writing to his preacher boys and his own sons after the faith. He gives Timothy and Titus areas to work on and actions to accomplish in order to be a good minister. At the time that the Apostle Paul was writing these epistles, he was near to his death. An exhorter is someone that builds people up through encouragement. Too many preachers tear their people down through harsh preaching. Preaching should be hard, not harsh. The pulpit should never be used as a whipping post. A good minister will encourage his people in what they are doing right while urging them to give up sin. A preacher that is an exhorter will have the heart of his people, and they will be more open to him. Everybody just needs a pat on the back once and awhile. The other side of exhortation is admonition. Paul instructed his preacher boys to exhort or warn others with longsuffering and doctrine (II Timothy 4:2). Paul wrote to Timothy on two separate occasions telling him that a bishop, or servant of the Lord must be “apt to teach” (I Timothy 3:2; II Timothy 2:24). This phrase means “skillful in teaching”. A pastor should be proficient in the practice of teaching. Teaching does not take the place of preaching, but good preaching will always have teaching mixed in. A good minister will study so that he can be a good teacher (II Timothy 2:15). He must be able to appropriately apply the truths found in Scripture and impart that doctrine to his people (Titus 2:1). If there is one that teaching any other doctrine, a good minister should turn away from him (I Timothy 1:3; 6:3).
