Currently, one looks to the award winning films when looking for entertainment even though they do not always depict the truth. Recently, a controversial film topped the charts. According to Los Angeles Times, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received forty-three major nominations for the 2018 awards season, winning twenty awards.” While attempting to get audience members to identify with and cheer on a racist cop, the movie has made several headlines. Many want to compare the movie to current events with police brutality or even the Blue Lives Matter and Black Lives Matter Movements. However, few are reporting on behalf of the real problem with the movie: the glorification of suicide. Although Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri …show more content…
Throughout the movie, he attempts to hide his sickness from the town. However, small town gossip spreads fast, so everyone knows. Willoughby still carried out his police chief duties and seemed to do so with a smile. Once leaving the hospital, he planned a whole day to spend with his family. Not known to the audience at the time that this would be the last time he would do this. He shot himself in the family barn later that night. According to Nicholas Proctor and Monika Ferguson in “Are There Warning Signs for Suicide?” adult warning signs of suicide can include “risky behavior ( reckless driving, promiscuous behavior) . . . psychomotor agitation (pacing around a room, wringing hands, pulling off clothing and putting it back on or other similar actions . . . [and] impulsivity (acting on a whim, displaying behavior characterized by little or no forethought, reflection or consideration of the consequences)” (31). With the movie blatantly not showing warning signs, it is harder for the audience to catch a glimpse at what a real suicide depiction should be. As many viewers watch, many were and continue to be appalled by the use of this. While movies do not have an obligation to stay true to the facts, using suicide as a shock factor should not be allowed. Many viewers should see the warning signs that way they can use these in their own lives as well. It is critical for friends and …show more content…
While most cried while reading the notes, the notes were simply there to add comic relief to a tense subject in a manner that disrespected suicide and only played in plot progression. According to Philip Perry in “Researchers Analyze 1,280 Suicide Notes to Devise a Better Prevention Strategy,” suicide notes “are only found in 14% of cases” and “many notes were addressed to one person. Others were to no one in particular.” Thus, Willoughby’s form of leaving multiple letters was a very rare thing to happen. Most people who take their life only leave a letter for a loved one such as a spouse, and Willoughby left three lengthy letters. The movie should have done research before making the movie to make this suicide seem realistic instead of using it as a chess

In the essay, “The Offensive Movie Cliche’ That Won’t Die”, the author, Matt Zoller Seitz argues that most films portraying good morals and positive attributes about an African American character may actually just be an illusion to the audience and that the strings controlling the puppet aren’t so friendly after all. He also mentions how the role of a “magical negro” shows up in real life. Throughout his text, Seitz exemplifies a number of cases where a “magical negro” exists in today’s popular movies. He mentions various instances where some of the most relevant actors play these roles of the “magical negro”, such as Danny Glover in Legendary, Cuba Gooding Jr. in What Dreams May Come, Will Smith in The Legend of Bagger Vance, Laurence Fishburne…

Hardly anyone would willingly escape to an economically depressed and small Midwestern town full of crushed dreams and a lack of purpose. In his film Nebraska, director Alexander Payne gives viewers the option of being tourists in this world, and surprisingly, it is an enjoyable trip with an uplifting ending, even if the main character’s dream is not realized completely.…

Rap and Hip-Hop began as a way to celebrate cultural unity and history through the African American Culture. Unfortunately, Rap and Hip-Hop and the frustrations and political advocacy it conveys through music and films have been associated with violence and incompetence in society (Blanchard 1999). This stigma has affected the way that African-Americans are seen in cinema and how they are treated in their professional lives. The documentary, Do the Right thing relates the prejudice African Americans face in the corporate world in Musing New Hoods because of the negative stigma established in American cinema, the conflict created by “guiltsploitation,” and the lack of trust and support from major corporations. In life, humans often mistake being occupied with true happiness and are content with what is more temporary and in abundance than having quality. Ray Bradbury warned that distraction creates the negative outcomes of suicide, lack of creativity and detachment when it is used to replace true happiness and self-actualization. Suicide often occurs among people who are usually distracted and find time to think about their lives and what they have actually done with it. In the beginning of the book, after Guy found Mildred nearly dead in their bedroom, he was distraught: “Her face was slender and milk-white, and in it was a kind of gentle hunger that touched over everything with tireless curiosity.…

To have a mainstream superhero movie that has strong female characters, an all-black main cast with a white “sidekick” character, and a message to the audience that reminds them that social inequality still exists is refreshing to say the least. As of March 24th, Black Panther is the top-grossing superhero film of all time globally earning $1.237 billion in ticket sales (McClintock), which means that mass amounts of people are seeing this movie and its message. Weaving current social issues into popular art culture, like movies, gets these social issues into a broader audience, to an audience that may have not known about these social issues beforehand. It is vital that the world keeps creating these forms of media that includes various social issues in them because the implications are that they will reach a more vast audience that may be able to fight back against these social issues. Because in the end, Black Panther is “just another superhero movie” and cannot end social inequality on its own, but it can be a jumping-off point for the generation that…

Q6: Suicide is selfish I think suicide seems selfish because it leaves behind survivors whose world is forever changed and who must grieve the loss of a loved one. He thought they would go on to live full and healthy lives, full of love and happiness. His act of suicide was not selfish, in his mind.…

It is also proven that the risk of a reoccurring mental illness rises when treatment is stopped (Orenstein). Also, Keith King, Catherine Strunk, and Micheal Sorter state, “Studies suggest that 90% of teenagers who commit suicide have a diagnosable and/or treatable mental disorder and that more than 50% of these teens had major depression,” meaning the suicide could have been prevented. Some of the warning signs of depression include: art that alludes to death, handing out personal possessions, suicidal mentions or ultimatums, a serious decline of grades or attendance, and abnormal changes in behavior (“Depression”). I have heard of at least three suicides in my life that have happened in my own community. All of these deaths happened because the warning signs and…
