Li Cunxin’s thoughts are clearly depicted throughout his autobiography. Showing the reader what Li Cunxin is thinking, is a trivial aspect in the readers’ understanding of his experiences. One moral statement made by Cunxin, states that “Nothing comes easily. There are no shortcuts. Things only come when one works for them. The actions of Li Cunxin speak numbers about how he responds when presented with issues and opportunities. It is often said that actions speak louder than words, and in the quote, “I went to the other boy and told him I was sorry for taking his place” this saying is as true as can be. This section demonstrates that he is empathetic toward the emotions of his cohort. An action that I see as particularly remarkable, was in the passage, “I surprised my Niang by producing the rest of my savings to buy some bean curd, which she loved.” which suggests that he is always doing whatever he can for the people he loves. To really show the audience what he went through to be selected for the ballet academy he described the trials. “They kept asking me if it hurt. It was excruciating! But I was determined to be chosen, so I kept smiling…” This proves that he pushed himself to his limits without showing any signs of pain so that he would be chosen.
