For almost than 50 years educational policy makers have been focused on reducing the educational equally gap between groups of students. Multiple groups such as students of low socioeconomic status, and students of color, particularly boys of color have been identified as not achieving as high as their counterparts and not graduating from high school. In recent years, the attention has been drawn to children in poverty and the disparities these students face. Policy makers acknowledge that students of low socioeconomic status face environmental factors putting that put them behind student of higher socioeconomic status. These environmental factors put the students at a disadvantage and behind their counterparts even before they start kindergarten. …show more content…
Reading has been identified as a key skill needed to be successful in the public school system. Although language has an effect on other aspects of reading, since phonemic skills have such a powerful predictive influence from the time a student's enters school, we will go ahead and start from the beginning. Language and its effect on phonic skills. Literacy is one of the major factors if that indicates if a student will complete school. It will also predict high school grades as well as discipline referral. Students with lower reading levels have higher discipline referrals in middle school, and high school. We also see lower literacy rates among our students of low socioeconomic status, minorities, and boys. Not only do these demographic groups show disparities in reading, they also have disparities in language skills as we will later …show more content…
Many criminally charged inmates have been identifying as having undetected literacy based learning disabilities. The evidence shows time and time again through adults that are not able to be employed and end up in criminal institution are that the key ingredients for a student to be successful are adequate literacy, and social skills. When looking at the impact our education system had on students, an important view in evaluating the effect of our education system is looking at those that have not been successful after college. It is reasonable to say that individuals that end up in jail have not been successful after high school, (% of them have some kind of language based deficit. It is unfortunate that we do not have the tools to identify language deficits that persist after early
