Those Winter Sundays Analysis

Robert Hayden presents a stimulating experience with his poem, “Those Winter Sundays.” He presents a poetic experience of his hardworking father, and his thanklessness as a child. It seems he presents this moment to signify how any child, no matter their race or religion, might not see the pain and turmoil their parents or guardians go through on their day to day lives. To think words can have such powerful emotions and feelings alone is thought provoking. Actions speak louder than words, is what comes to mind when reading this poetic classic. “Those Winter Sundays.” The title presents itself as a forthcoming of the events that follow. We see Hayden’s father planning the day and getting things ready for his family, feeling the room with warmth. Most kids don’t know the hardships there parents can take. It seems as though they had trouble speaking to each other, as any child, a father can be intimidating. I can imagine him getting up after his father called him, and trying to figure out what to say to him, but unfortunately cannot find the words to say to him. I sympathize with him as I understand this situation all too well.
You can tell that Hayden viewed this through an adults eyes looking back. The phrases and emotions used seems to signify a revelation he had while writing the poem. How parents love their children and what sacrifices they make to see their children happy. It doesn’t seem though that Hayden was trying to make a point by the scene alone but by the actions in which his father took to make sure things were ready that Sunday morning. The same thing could have been said about almost anything time or place, but the feeling still would have still conveyed his
