Thorfinn had a brother called Ivar, who also went to Norway to visit the court of King Eystein. Ivar was intelligent and a good poet. The king thought very highly of Ivar. Thorfinn had the benefit of his brother’s popularity, but soon found it very trying on his brother’s position. As a result, Thorfinn grew discontented with court life and decided to return to Iceland.
On being received by King Eystein, Thorfinn said ‘I wish to leave Iceland, for I long to see my homeland.’

Thorfinn then headed homeward. As for Ivar, he turned back towards King Eystein’s court after leaving Thorfinn. Thorfinn put out to sea, and had a good passage. By the time he reached shore, men sent by his father Snorri, to whom Thorfinn had sent word, had arrived, and came down to the beach. Thorfinn’s situation was by this time extremely prosperous and he was highly respected. When Thorfinn and his men returned to the farm, Snorri gave him a hearty welcome and asked him whether they had been well received at King Eystein’s court. Thorfinn have him a glowing report and told him of King Eystein’s concluding words and gifts. Snorri was highly pleased at this.
Hearing of Oddny from Ivar and also that Jon was the foremost farmer of the Borg district, Thorfinn decided to propose to Oddny. Snorri said that they would come to no harm from this decision.
