Thoreau's Philosophy

I do agree with Thoreau’s argument, that the comfort of solitude is something that one can develop within themselves, and can prevent loneliness rather than prevent it, due to it encouraging one to become more independent and free-thinking. “I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude”, by this Thoreau means that the independence he has found through solitude has helped him to become more independent, therefore he does not feel the need to interact with others to gain new thoughts, but more so that he is fine with his own thoughts. I agree with Thoreau that it is important for one to practice solitude, and to be able to form their own opinions and ideas, but at the same time I feel that it is important for humans to still interact with one another. …show more content…
“Some of my pleasantest hours were during the long rain-storms in the spring or fall, which confined me to the house for the afternoon as well as the forenoon, soothed by their ceaseless roar and pelting; when an early twilight ushered in a long evening in which many thoughts had time to take root and unfold themselves” here Thoreau is expressing how at times when he was physically alone he did not feel lonely because of the comfort he finds within his own thoughts and within nature. I do agree with Thoreau that loneliness and solitude are two separate things, because loneliness is more associated with depression and sadness, while solitude is more associated with independence. I believe that it is healthy for one to spend (to a certain extent) time with their own thoughts, and when one does that they should not be viewed as lonely but rather, individualistic. When compared to loneliness, peace within solitude shows that one is fine with being alone with their thoughts, but when one is lonely then they it shows that they are not alright with being alone with their thoughts, or physically

Thoreau does not suggest isolation, he merely wants us to not be overwhelmed and deceived by the new advancements in communication. Yes, he argues, the news is great, but we do not need to constantly be bombarded by the same things over and over. Thoreau wants us to adopt a lifestyle of connection with the universe, but to get this way, we must “spend one day as deliberately as Nature, and not be thrown off the track by every nutshell and mosquito’s wing that falls on the rails.” He says near the end of the essay, “If we are alive, let us go about our business.” So, while we can stay in society and not be isolated from the world at all times, we must never forget to truly…

His philosophy is one that has changed the way that many people have looked at themselves and their place in society. However his society is a thing of the past. His society is one that had different values and norms. Stating that possessions create complication is obsolete, although his ideas are very relevant in terms of obsession, society has created a way for people to connect with the world around them and live fuller lives.…

Based on the research I found throughout Thoreau’s writings, as well as the textbook, I have come to the conclusion that the public during this era were very materialistic, and dependent on the concept of industrializing. There was a select few people who called themselves Individualists, that believed “…modern society stifled individual judgment by making men “tools of their tools,” trapped in stultifying jobs by their obsession with acquiring wealth.” The Market Revolution was a time period of industrialization. It focused on not only improvements for the economy, such as means of transportation and the trading of slaves, but also improvements for the market and individualistic thinkers. The public really liked the idea of anything that would…

There is no need to accept the previously traditional ways of living. In an effort to connect to a spiritually rich life and to show the shortcomings of a common life, Thoreau moves a mile outside of the nearest neighbor and builds his home away from society at Walden Pond in an experiment of self-reliance. However, when digging deeper, the hypocrisy of Thoreau begins to emerge. In his quest to be within nature, he only moves a mile from his nearest neighbor with a connection to society still looming.…

In order to live a full life, it is necessary to spend time thinking, reflecting, and improving, instead of stressing about everyday life and its details. Thoreau’s perception of life can be applied to the modern world, where distractions and details are rampant. Instead of spending time and focusing on details such as technology, social media, and the sort, one should strive to develop as a person and simplify life, since true fulfillment lies from deep within and can only be attained after a lifetime of thinking and…
