Thomas Newkirk My Family

Imagine a young girl, about three year’s old sitting in her wooden rocking chair surrounded by picture books. They are sprawled all over the floor, and here she sits and “reads” aloud to her stuffed animals. But, she doesn’t know how to read, so she makes the story up based on the pictures she sees in the book. Now imagine the same young girl, now she is five years old. She sits on a chair with crayons of every color, coloring books, and paper spread across the kitchen table. She sits here and draws “humpty dumpty” shaped people and scribbles for hours filling page after page. A few years go by and she is now seven years old and starting the first grade. She is given the chance to write a book and titles it “My Family.” She is so proud of it, …show more content…
I have never been a good writer or speller. I constantly spell the same words wrong over and over again and get the same critique marks on my paper. Unfortunately, I can never seem to fix the problem. I was always a little behind in elementary school, spelling words wrong and making grammar mistakes, but it was never too noticeable until fourth grade because for the most part. I think this is due partly to the argument Thomas Newkirk’s makes when he says, children still link pictures and words together in adolescence, it just starts to become more focused on writing starting in the second grade. I actually very much so enjoyed writing throughout elementary school because I was able to write stories. This style of writing was enjoyable to me because it allowed me to let my creativity soar, and not only did it help my grammar, it also helped my penmanship. This style was also way more exciting than filling out worksheets or practicing spelling words out on a white board. But, in fourth grade, half of our english class was spent learning grammar. I constantly struggled in that class and never could seem to grasp the concepts. This is the same for my papers. I kept getting the same comments throughout high school such as, what is your main idea, and remove the “fluff”. But as much as I would try, over and over again I got the same comments. It’s not that I’m …show more content…
Deborah Brant’s definition of a literary sponsor is, “people, institutions, and circumstances that make it possible for a person to become literate and shape the way the person actually acquires literacy” (43). All of my literary sponsors fit perfectly into that definition. My grandma and parents would have been my reading sponsors, my teachers were my writing sponsors, and the school was overall my literary sponsor. Without these people I would not be the literate person that I am today, nor would I have acquired literacy. Although reading and writing is only something I do in the school setting, I am very grateful to have to ability to read and write because so many people do not have this same

One of the main literacy sponsors growing up was my mom. She was a three grade teacher until I was born. As I grew up she made sure I was reading a book and not wasting all my time watching tv. When I was still learning how to read chapter books my mom would sit on the couch with me and read for at least forty minutes every day so that I grew my read and vocabulary skills. On car rides, weather it was long or short, or if I was just sitting at the baseball field watching my brother play she always made me bring a book with me.…

Often times personal literacy and sponsorship are based on the environmental influences and socioeconomically circumstances which govern a person’s exposure to educational institutions. As Deborah Brandt defines in her article Sponsors in Literacy, “Intuitively, sponsors seemed a fitting term for the figures who turned up most typically in people’s memories of literacy learning: older relatives, teachers, priests, supervisors, military officers, editors, influential authors”. (Brandt, 167) On the other hand, I would consider my main influences, in preparing me for college writing, to be my supervisors, college professors, and influential authors I encountered.…

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

As a young child at school, we had the Accelerated Reading Program. It was a program that encouraged children to read various books, and then after to take a quiz based on the books. This program really helped me, because the program pushed me to read more. Since I am bilingual, learning two languages as a child was a bit challenging for me, and learning how to read was even harder. I would sometimes mix up letters, vowels, and sometimes talk in Russian when I was supposed to talk in English.…

Literacy Narrative I view myself as an average writer and reader for my age. The guidance and support from others is what I believe supports my literacy the most. This consists of my parents pushing me to do my best by encouraging me to read and write better by their support and guidance through assignments and doing other forms of literacy for entertainment. I never always viewed myself as an average writer and reader for my age, I actually thought my literacy was quiet mediocre. It has been just recently that I feel I have become an average write and reader.…

I feel that writing is a good subject to be familiar and practicing in frequently, it is a necessary tool to communicate properly. Although, if I were to be truthful I’d have to say that I am not the biggest fan of it due to the fact that it bores me and I have trouble figuring out what to say. So I find it hard to enjoy writing because most of the time I am just struggling to concentrate because I don’t have much more to say about a topic. Recently, since I have not been in school for a while, I have found myself forgetting rules to the English language in my everyday speech so I find it to be useful. This has influenced how I feel about writing because the more I write, the more easily I can remember to use these rules in my daily…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…
