Thomas Leafy Dawn Summary

Improved Essays
Thomas states that the tree will not set its frost-burnt leafage free.
I think the tree moans in eldritch glee because it is aware that it is holding on to its leaves which is pleasing; however, the tree knows that it is weird to still have leaves during winter, so it fearfully moans.
I would ask her to explain the last two lines of the sonnet because I found them difficult to decipher.
Thomas calls the tree a faithless tree because the holds on to its summer leaves with the notion that once it loses its leaves, they will never grow back: the tree does that believe that spring will come and “make a leafy dawn.”
The plot of the story I would be creating would be about parents who are hesitant about allowing their child live on campus because

In the book “The Giving Tree” by Shell Silberstein the reader learns that the Giving Tree has a deeper meaning than just a regular children’s book. When you read the book it sounds just like a nice story, but after you interpret the meaning of every line you realize that there is much more to it. Some interpret the book as something to promote bad behavior and others interpret the book as a way people looked at nature at the time the book was written. The giving Tree is about a boy who is friends with a tree and ends up using the tree to benefit himself throughout the book.…

While two epic similes referencing the battle in book sixteen of The Iliad translated by Richmond Lattimore present very different ideas of battle, they work together to create a more complex and nuanced picture of the war between the Achaians and the Trojans. The first simile from lines 765-776 talks about the battle as “east wind and south wind [fighting] it out with each other” (16.765; 372). The second simile, which follows shortly after on lines 823-829, refers to Hektor “as a lion [that] overpowers a weariless boar in combat” when he takes the life of Patroklos (16.823; 373). Homer uses these two similes so close to each other to allow us to peer into the different levels at which the war is being fought. The wind simile is a commentary…

The author of this passage uses tone to try to convey the idea that the narrator’s perspective towards the tree has changed over time. In the first paragraph, the author uses strong diction that represents power to create the intimidating and dark tone. Phrases such as “artillery piece,” “huge lone spike,” “forbidding,” and “dominating” are all used in the very short, one sentence-long first paragraph. These set the dark and intimidating tone of the paragraph, which allows the narrator to convey that he/she had perceived the tree as threatening and as a superior.…

In Zora Neale Hurston’s book, Their Eyes Were Watching God, she uses a lot of symbolism and references to nature through the story of the main character, Janie, in her lifetime. The use of tree symbolism is the most common in the first half of Hurston’s novel starting with how “Janie saw her life like a great tree in leaf with the things suffered, things enjoyed, things done and undone. Dawn and doom was in the branches” (8) In the beginning of the book, we understand that Janie has just been on a journey full of wonderful and terrible things. When Janie arrives home from her journey, her friend Pheoby goes to Janie’s house and Janie begins telling her life story to her friend whom she hasn’t seen in a long time.…

The madrigal that is being analyzed is Claudio Monteverdi’s “Oime, il bel viso”(madrigal, a 5+bc; from Il sesto libro de’ madrigali [The Sixth Book of Madrigals], 1614; text by Francesco Petrarch, Canzoniere, sonnet no. 267). This madrigal can be seen as a piece that works as a coherent piece of music. This is madrigal works as a coherent piece of music with the help of repetition of motives in the madrigal, the divisions of the madrigal add to the whole piece to unify it, and relationship between the music Monteverdi and the sonnet Petrarch wrote. These three main reasons prove that when a composer wants to convey a piece of poetry they make sure that the music they are writing and the piece of poetry they are using are able to work together…

The passage discusses the emotion elicited from a tree being cut down by the axe. Initially a sense of helplessness and sadness overwhelms the senses. The tree “shudders”, “its branches breaking”, Tolstoy humanizes the tree when describing its death. The Tree has no choice or say in its death. Man has physical capability over the tree, yet the tree is a living thing, and reading this passage as a stand alone may convince us to view this as a wrong or unnatural death.…

At surface level, we now know the tree feels lonely because absence of birds, which presumably is due to the fact that it is winter. Just as birds must eventually leave the branches of trees they nest in in order to migrate, Millay’s children must eventually leave her arms and company in order to pursue a life of their own. The imagery of a lonely tree symbolizes how Millay is rooted down and seemingly stuck, unable to attempt to oppose life’s inevitable change, as time passes her by leaving her falling into an eternal abyss of despair and loneliness. In the final couplet of “Sonnet XLIII,” it is stated that “I only know that summer sang in me / a little while, that in me sings no more,” (13-14) and the usage of summer helps juxtapose the previous notion…

"The Black Walnut Tree" is a contention between the strict and non-literal, the down to earth and wistful. In an obvious actuality, verging on contemptuous tone, the mother and daughter discuss cutting downed selling the tree to pay off their home loan. In any case, with a move to more metaphorical dialect comes a change to a more typical perspective of the black walnut tree: it is an image of their family legacy and father's work, and however the home loan measures overwhelming, chopping down the tree would be a kind of dishonorable double-crossing. "The Black Walnut Tree" is composed in free verse and clear, open vocabulary, which is most purported toward the starting: “My mother and I debate: we could sell / the black walnut tree /to the lumberman / and pay off the mortgage.” It is stated casually and the symbolic meaning the tree had later in the poem is currently unknown or, more likely, suppressed.…
