Thomas Jefferson's 'Toulmin System Of Logic'

Thomas Jefferson was one of the founding fathers and the third president of the United States of America. Many people remember him as the writer of the “Declaration of Independence”. In this document Jefferson states that a government who doesn’t protect its people right should be change. King George of England had imposed many unjust laws in the colonies. The colonies knew that this would start a war, the document was sent to King George. It was also meant for other countries to let them know that the colonies were declaring their independence from England. The king didn’t like this and declared war on the colonies and so began the American Revolution .Jefferson used examples of unjust laws that the king had implement against the colonist. Jefferson used a method called “The Toulmin System of Logic” to get message across to his reader. This system use a logical approach towards an argument. He states “Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed” (226 Jefferson). He saying that an old government should not be abolish without a good reason. This needed to be before he gave all the data because it shows how serious the problem was. This helps Jefferson because it shows the reader that he wouldn’t want to change the government for a little problem only for a major issue. For a government to be abolish the power must be enough for all the people in the country to accept changing the government. The colonist did this by having a convention to decide if they were going to declare independence. This was the only logical approach they had left since King George didn’t listen to
