When we hear Thomas Jefferson we think of our third president of the United States. Although, he was so much more than our president. He was an architect and had designed his residence and the famous building which is today known as the Monticello. In the book “Thomas Jefferson: An art of power” written by Meacham (2012) states “he seems to have been rarely happier than when he was in the midst of construction” (pg.285). He was a political figure as well. He was a founding father and helped write the Declaration of Independence with the ideals based off the philosopher, John Locke. After his presidency, he went back to participating in architecture. According to the Library of Congress (2000) “Jefferson prepared plans for the Virginia capitol in Richmond based on the famous building Maison Carrée in Nîmes, France […] the Virginia capitol was the first public building in the United States designed in the neoclassical style”. He based his architecture designs from his visits from France. He admired the designs of neoclassical which he took from the France structure while he was an ambassador there. These structures consisted of perception that was a sign of enlightenment which ideology that he held close. In the book written by Meacham (2012) which states “nearly fifty neoclassical custom houses”
