Finally, Thomas Jefferson is used interestingly as an allusion in the novel making the readers wonder why his name was even mentioned in the first place. Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 on a plantation in Virginia (Thomas Jefferson Biography). Like Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson was born into a large family and was the third of ten children (Thomas Jefferson Biography). He began his education at a young age studying the languages of Latin and Greek, then expanded his education to literature and math where he maximized his educational opportunities. In college, his peers seemed to be interested in anything but studying, so he approached the older educators and gained the majority of his education from them (Thomas Jefferson Biography).

It seemed that Jefferson’s educational background became important when he was particularly selected by a committee to compose the first draft of the Declaration of Independence (Thomas Jefferson Biography). The words of Thomas Jefferson that were the most valued were “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights; that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” To the American colonists this meant natural human rights, freedom, and equality for everyone.
