Thomas Harriot Research Paper

Now is the time where I make the distinction between ancient times and modern times. This distinction is marked by two events which took place in the year of 1609. On July 26 of the year Thomas Harriot, a British astronomer and mathematician, among other things, was the first man to look through a "Dutch truncke", or telescope, at the moon and record what he saw. On July 26, 1609 he recorded his first sketch of the moon. Over the next year and a half he drew another seven sketches and two of what he called "Moon maps." These Moon maps were astonishingly accurate and showed many distinct features of the Moon. Included in these sketches was an outline of the lunar terminator, the dividing line between the illuminated and shaded parts of the Moon.

Nathaniel Hawthrone was raised in Massachusetts during the Puritan era. I think that due to his connection to the Puritan heritage through his ancestors who were Puritans and involved in the Salem witch trials of 1692, he wrote frequently about the 17th century Puritan era in American history to express his negative feelings about the cruelty and injustice of Puritanism that he had observed through his ancestors. Hawthrone was aware of his family's role in colonial America, and through his writing, I feel that he was able to express his opinion about Puritanism and emphasize the religious experiences he had witnessed by writing stories of characters going through life set in that time period. The extreme world view of the Puritan belief of…

His defense argued that he was not eligible for death row because of his mental state. The court ignored the argument and passed it off, saying that they were using his illness as an excuse to “get out of” maximum punishment. As demonstrated in this case, mental illness is not given the attention it deserves when determining a sentence. Cases such as these have aroused concern how fair the criminal court is towards the mentally ill.…
