Looking back through the years in history you will find several Scientist that stand out in their fields of study for various reasons. But, have you ever thought of what life events helped them decide what they would become? Thomas Edison is well known for his invention the light bulb which is commonly used today. However there are some interesting facts about his life that few of us know about. First, Thomas was hard of hearing and actually liked it. He was also homeschooled by his mother. And finally that he outran a speeding train.

As a small boy, Thomas entered school just like every other boy his age. He was a very inquisitive child whom his teacher labeled as “addled” which in today’s society would probably be ADHD. Once his mother found out after only three months of formal education, she pulled him from the school and started to homeschool. Thomas was later quoted as saying "My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me, and I felt I had someone to live for, someone I must not disappoint.” Due to his mother, he received an outstanding education that he wouldn’t have otherwise received.

There are several different stories as to how he became hard of hearing such as loud noises from his experiments, being picked up by his ears from a train conductor, and losing his hearing after fighting off scarlet fever. It doesn’t really matter how he became hard of hearing, the fact remains the same that he couldn’t hear. Thomas however enjoyed being hard of hearing.
